As you may know, Sri Lanka has been hit by a powerful cyclone that flooded the country severely in the last week of November. The latest death toll (as of 2nd December) stands at 335 with new cases being reported daily. Although the rains have now subsided, the next challenges are still ahead, as limited access to clean drinking water, plenty of water bodies for mosquitos to procreate and a devastated infrastructure leaves the population very vulnerable.
Ava Charity has found a local partner in Hashini’s cousin, Professor Dr. Arinda Dharmapala. He has mobilised the Kandy Society of Medicine to take donations and provide relief in the area in around Kandy, which is one of the hardest hit areas due to the mountainous landscape. We have so far donated LKR 100 000 to this cause, with a pledge to donate more as required.
